Last night it was freezing out here, but we still braved the cold to go check out Glasgow’s Frightened Rabbit at the Bowery. I have been meaning to catch this band for a while, but I seem to be out of town every other time they have come through. Before the show, we had dinner at barmarche in SoHo (Spring /Elizabeth) since it is only a couple of blocks from the venue. The best things on their menu are the stuffed dates and bass taquitos(more like fish tacos) and we got them both. I also imbibed in a lemon basil martini. I’m going to try to make this at home.
We got to the Bowery after the 2 openers were already done, so can’t comment on their performance. It was another sold out night there, and we lurked in the back near the bar. As most probably know, the Bowery has pretty good sightlines throughout the venue. You just have to watch out for the tall folk. Even though the show was technically 16+ ages, I didn’t really ever feel like it was a young show. Most in the crowd seemed to be genuine fans and surprisingly tame for a Saturday night show with an 11 PM start time for the headliners.
The show started with The Modern Leper… awesome song and also the start to their latest CD, The Midnight Organ Fight. The lead singer Scott Hutchison and the rest of the band seemed genuinely enthused to be playing at the Bowery. It is probably the largest venue they have played in NYC, and they stated “this [was] a very special night for them”. The performance showcased the latest CD along with a smattering of songs from Sing the Greys. Highlights for me were Good Arms Vs. Bad Arms and Head Rolls Off.
They played an encore that only left me wanting more. At first it was Scott on stage playing an acoustic version of “Poke” in which the crowd had to be extremely quiet. He played without a mic or amplifier. Almost everyone stood still completely silent except for the “wooohooo” parts in which the crowd gladly accompanied the performance. Awesome! The band is often compared to indie giants Neutral Milk Hotel. And they played a cover in the encore from their first album titled "Song Against Sex". The last track was Keep Yourself Warm. It was perfectly appropriate for a cold cold winter night.
